To find the right springers for a playground, it is important to know which age group is going to be using the play equipment. If the equipment is intended for very young children, we recommend double-sided springers. Models such as the Shark, the Car and Willy the Whale are suitable for children as young as 1 year old, as the sides surround and support them if necessary.
For older children needing more of a challenge, our classic models such as the Tiger and the Motorcycle are good options. Children can also try one of our newer springers, such as Bobi, which stands out for not having a traditional front and back, but a larger seat so that more than one child can climb on for a ride.
Playing on springers is a source of excitement for children, while also supporting their natural development. Keeping a springer rocking exercises the whole body. It trains the major muscle groups and also benefits children’s awareness of their own bodies, or proprioception. The latter is especially important to understanding your body’s reactions and signals. They must be able to feel comfortable in their own body, and this requires forming experiences and learning about their bodily sensations, and how they relate to the sensory impressions and feelings they get from their surroundings.
Rocking back and forth gives children a strong sense of cause and effect while also improving their vestibular sense – which in turn strengthens their sense of balance and learning abilities, for example.
The thematic design of the springers also supports role-play, whether riding a horse, plane or frog. Role-play strengthens the children’s language and social skills, while taking on the different roles helps children to process their emotions and experiences.
When deciding where to position a springer in the playground, a number of factors need to be taken into account to achieve the best possible layout. Like slides and swings, springers see a lot of fast-moving play and high noise levels. It is usually a good idea to group this kind of equipment together and at a distance from playhouses and sandboxes where children need peace and quiet to concentrate on what they are doing.
If you are going to have several springers, you can add to the social dimension of the playground by placing them together. This gives children the opportunity to compete with one another while playing, for example, “Who’s going to be first?!”
