An inclusive playground is designed to bring children together through play rather than dividing them up or creating special zones. All children, regardless of disability, should be able to play together in the playground.
To achieve this, two factors are key: The playground layout and the surfacing. Inclusive playgrounds have to be accessible, i.e. there must be surfaces that everyone can use, and easy access is needed to all the play equipment. Here, the obvious choice for the playground surfacing is rubber. This ensures a stable surface for walking-impaired children or parents, and for wheelchair users. At the same time, the surface can be designed to create clear or different-coloured play zones, which can be an advantage for children with cognitive disabilities.
Perhaps not every child can play with all the equipment, but all children can engage in at least some of the playground activities, and there is space for playing together. We have more than 50 years of experience at designing inclusive play areas with fun play activities for everyone.

All children enjoy and learn a lot from playing with each other whatever their differences, including any disabilities – in fact, play is a learning experience for both parties. Children without any disability, for example, become more empathetic when playing with disabled children, while disabled children will develop a more positive understanding of themselves and their own abilities.

Our products for inclusive playgrounds have been selected on the basis that they must be easy to access and close to ground level. This allows children to play on their own without needing assistance for much of the time. For example, the play panels and playhouses from our Explore series are easy to get around. Here, all children can come together and engage in role-play at the kitchen or train their fine motor skills with the moving parts. For children wanting to head off to sea, our pirate ship Hafnia is a good solution. The ship is spacious and has openings along the sides, which makes the play activities easily accessible.
If more speed is needed, we have a range of carousels and spinners, including a wheelchair-friendly carousel and spinners where the children can easily sit down and enjoy a whirl. And if the children need a break, they can always relax for a bit in the Bird’s nest. The play equipment thus comprises a wide variety of different products and makes it possible to design a complete playground.
